ENGLEWOOD Cole Customers of the nation's largest cable operator may receive 500 channels or more via a new digital service planned for January 1994. TCIs Jake Malone said the firm will buy up to 1 million compressed digital terminals to decode signals at consumers homes. Satellite dishes customers could get similar services by mid 1993. The compression system converts analog signals to a digital format read by a computer, enabling 10 channels or more to fit in the bandwidth of a typical 54 channel system, potentially yielding 540 channels or more. Fiber coaxial cable will carry the digital signal.
