The Aiken County Council may hire Barnwell County Administrator William Shepherd as the new county manager after his resignation becomes effective December 20. Shepherd, a retired Army colonel, has led Barnwell for 13 months and was viewed as a strong, stabilizing choice by Council Chairman Danny Black. If confirmed tonight, he could start before year’s end.
Palmetto CableVision will upgrade its Palmetto area system with fiber optic trunk lines starting next June. About 40 miles of trunk lines will be installed in New Ellenton Jackson and Midland Valley as part of a full system replacement over two to three years. Basic service will rise to 18.53 per month economy to 22.40 and all premium channels except Disney will gain 1.00.
Shiite captors freed Alain Steen in Lebanon after nearly five years in captivity. The release follows another hostage release and leaves Terry Anderson as the sole remaining American hostage in Lebanon.
The South Carolina Reinsurance Facility expects a statewide rate cut for auto insurance recoupment fees if the Insurance Department approves. The facility posted a 168 million dollar loss for the year ended September, 5 percent less than the prior year, and customers with clean records would save about 2.65 dollars annually on a total near 59 dollars while the worst drivers could save around 120 dollars.
A national AP poll shows 78 percent feelings toward the Japanese as friendly fifty years after Pearl Harbor while about two of three Americans view Japan as an economic threat. The survey covers 1,006 adults with 11 percent unfriendly and 11 percent unsure.
Pearl Harbor survivor Bruce Wright recalls buying a carton of cigarettes in December 1941 after the Japanese attack. He says he planned to let the cigarettes get him before the Japs could, as life aboard the USS Selfridge continued among ongoing fears of survival.
