In a five month chase by 20 000 troops Lucio Cabanas is killed in a clash in southern Mexico. Ten other guerrillas died with him and a separate Saturday shootout left 17 more dead. Cabanas 36 was among Latin Americas best known guerrillas since Che Guevara.
Rank and file United Mine Workers members vote on a three year coal contract as a three week strike continues. Preliminary Monday results show a generally close vote with one Alabama district passing the contract 2 to 1. Snowstorms slowed voting and Arnold Miller ordered an extension through Wednesday. Final results unlikely before Thursday with work resuming possibly at midnight Sunday if ratified.
Assistant prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste cross examines Haldeman at the Watergate cover-up trial. Haldeman says he did not reveal a clandestine taping system due to orders from President Nixon. He notes he resigned two weeks before the May 14 1973 grand jury appearance but remained subject to presidential orders.
Outdoor sports note a small craft advisory on area lakes. Sunshine likely with a high near 52 today and about 60 tomorrow as northwest winds 15 to 25 mph taper this evening. Tonight’s low approx 25 degrees with near zero rain chances through Wednesday.
Former Aiken County roads and bridges official Walter Byrd faced a statutory rape charge for an Oct 26 incident in North Augusta. He surrendered to authorities, was arraigned in 13th Circuit Court, and released on a $5 000 bond. The trial date was not set.
Aiken County man Tom McCorkle 31 of Randolph Trailer Park Clearwater was arrested for receiving money under false pretense related to distributing phony anti-freeze. Investigators Ed Yarborough and Manny Brooks uncovered the Co-Fax Chemical Co scheme with a Savannah connection and a local truck stop owner.
Hazardous driving from the lower Great Lakes into the Northeast as a monster weekend storm dumps 18 to 20 inches in southern Michigan and parts of Ohio. The system brings heavy snow warnings, freezing rain, power outages, and school closures with thousands stranded and workers aiding stranded motorists.
Margie Scroggs visiting from Shelby North Carolina asks her niece Susie Houser if she believes in Santa Claus. Susie replies she believes in the Pilgrims and Indians but doubts Santa. Aiken post office displays a Christmas package table for customers and the rush, needing chairs for those waiting.
Circuit Court Judge Frank Eppes due to rule on a petition seeking judicial review of DHEC approval for a new 190 bed Aiken County hospital. Hearing held Nov 19 in Aiken. four residents cited illegalities in the process. Judge says state sessions and assignments delay ruling, aims for decision within two weeks.
The Aiken Jaycees and the Salvation Army open annual drives to aid Aiken County families. The Jaycees plan a Dec 21 shopping tour for needy children, while the Salvation Army sponsors Christmas cheer for underprivileged families.
