Legendary Latin guerrilla leader Lucio Cabanas dies in battle

In a five month chase by 20 000 troops Lucio Cabanas is killed in a clash in southern Mexico. Ten other guerrillas died with him and a separate Saturday shootout left 17 more dead. Cabanas 36 was among Latin Americas best known guerrillas since Che Guevara.

Coal Contract Voting Continues In West Virginia

Rank and file United Mine Workers members vote on a three year coal contract as a three week strike continues. Preliminary Monday results show a generally close vote with one Alabama district passing the contract 2 to 1. Snowstorms slowed voting and Arnold Miller ordered an extension through Wednesday. Final results unlikely before Thursday with work resuming possibly at midnight Sunday if ratified.

Aiken County man Tom McCorkle 31 of Randolph Trailer Park Clearwater was arrested for receiving money under false pretense related to distributing phony anti-freeze. Investigators Ed Yarborough and Manny Brooks uncovered the Co-Fax Chemical Co scheme with a Savannah connection and a local truck stop owner.
