The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 3.69 points to 801.35, a new 1969 low, with 959 declines and 389 advances on the NYSE and volume near 9.95 million. Analysts cite tight money, Vietnam war pessimism, and year end tax-loss selling as pressure factors. The AP 60-stock average dropped to 276.3, another 1969 low.
Rome police ordered the 16 member American Living Theater troupe to leave Italy after charges of public obscenity for a near nude performance at the University of Rome law school. Leader Julian Beck said the group would depart immediately for Belgium.
Gov. Ronald Reagan announced he would not run for the U.S. Senate in 1970, saying he might seek a second term as California governor instead. He deflected questions about future plans but praised Sen. George Murphy and pledged to help return Murphy to Washington.
The Boeing 747, the largest commercial airliner, made its first transcontinental arrival at Kennedy Airport amid a landing delay caused by an air traffic jam over Long Island. Pan American directors including Charles A Lindbergh observed the giant, which dwarfs the 707 with a six story tail, wider wings, and greater length.
A Los Angeles grand jury agreed to investigate the Sharon Tate killings tied to a hippie group as Linda Kasabian and others are arrested. Police cite several suspects including Patricia Krenwinkel and Charles Watson, with connections to the Manson cult and related killings.
The Aiken Training Track area fills with horses for spring work as stables report arrivals and expected entries. Earl Griffeth outlined a $15 000 first year budget for an information and referral center on alcoholism in Aiken County. The center aims to replace complex city centers and could receive federal funding. the commission has formed bylaws and seeks incorporation next year. Griffeth cited about 54 000 South Carolina alcoholics, around two percent of the population, with one third women.
North Korea released three American crewmen held since August when their unarmed utility helicopter was downed by ground fire. Capt. David H. Crawford Malcom V Lopeke and Herman E Hofstatter arrived at the conference site at 11 48 a m local time. Lopeke was the pilot and Hofstatter used crutches though the others appeared in good health.
The U S Court of Military Appeals ruled that interviews and photographs about the My Lai massacre may continue. It said trial fairness for Lt William L Calley Jr remains protected and that publishers bear responsibility for accurate reporting.
Saigon reports 30 targets hit overnight by enemy gunners leaving seven Americans dead and 19 wounded. The highest US casualties in a 24 hour period since August followed barrages that damaged helicopters and hit camps including Bu Prang Special Forces and the 1st Air Cavalry Division headquarters near Saigon.
The Aiken Jaycees with local support plan a Christmas shopping tour to aid more than 400 underprivileged children in Aiken County. Tour on December 20 aims to match last year’s $1,500 donations and aid 115 children, with current contributions totaling $323 from individuals and groups.
