Thurmond to Attend Dedication of Monument on State House Grounds

A bronze and granite monument to Sen Strom Thurmond will be unveiled Saturday at 3 p.m. on the South Carolina State House grounds in Columbia. The dedication marks the eve of Thurmonds 97th birthday with Thurmond and his family expected to attend along with Gov. Jim Hodges and other speakers. The Thurmond Monument Commission, created in 1997, raised funds from major contributors such as BellSouth SCANA Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Wachovia Bank. William Behrends of Tryon NC designed the statue, modeled on Thurmonds likeness from the 1960s during his early Senate years.

Judge delays arraignment in Ark murder for hire case

In Bentonville Arkansas a judge postponed the arraignment of Rose Cushman 43 after she appeared unable to understand court proceedings due to medication. Co defendant James Baughman 42 pleaded innocent to two counts of capital murder.

Quilters find niche in art of the stitch

Windsor resident Vicky Bradford and her daughter-in-law Heather formed Specialty Designs by BradArt after three years of machine sewn blankets. The duo, operating at craft shows and by order, sell to New York and Florida clients and even redecorated a guest room for a fashion-minded buyer. They credit rapid wear with five sewing machines in 18 months and describe upgrading to two $1500 Singers. This will be BradArt’s third Odell Weeks Center Christmas Craft Show appearance.

Burglar Misses Trial Then Receives Ten Year Sentence

Edwin K Jeffers failed to appear for a trial in Aiken County General Sessions Court and was later brought in by deputies. Judge James C Williams Jr sentenced the 39 year old to ten years for second degree burglary. State prosecutor Ben Moore said Jeffers has a long crime record since 1989 including burglary shoplifting forgery resisting arrest and breach of trust. The case stemmed from video evidence at the Eagle Express convenience store and related surveillance photos. The court ordered substance addiction counseling to be included in the sentence with potential ten years to complete the program.
