Traffic deaths climbed to 617 as Thanksgiving weekend neared its end with thousands of motorists on the road. Conditions were generally favorable except for heavy snow in the eastern Great Lakes and dense fog in the Northwest.
Nineteen bodies were recovered after the San Luis Gonzaga church roof collapsed on Saturday night as about 200 worshippers gathered for a dedication mass. Rescuers feared further collapse from a structurally connected section, delaying further searches. Several people escaped unharmed and three were hospitalized. police reported no missing persons.
Heavy fog blankets Interstate 5 from south of Tacoma to the Canadian border causing hundreds of crashes on the icy highway. A Varig Airlines four-jet Boeing 707 with 80 passengers and 15 crew was hijacked Friday night after a Paris stopover en route from London to Rio de Janeiro. The aircraft refueled in San Juan and Havana before landing in Rio where all aboard were detained for questioning. The hijacker, a 32 year old French Algerian, used a knife and pistol to seize control.
In Copenhagen Italy and Austria agreed on a four year program granting greater autonomy to about 150,000 German speaking Tyroleans in Alto Adige. The accord ends eight years of talks between Foreign Ministers Waldheim and More. The region has seen terrorism and damage totaling 33 deaths and over 6 million dollars in the past decade.
A homemade bomb was found by police in front of the Czechoslovak Embassy in Rio de Janeiro after its timing device failed to detonate. Police said the dynamite device was defective and, if it had exploded, would have caused heavy damage.

Johnny Earl Price, a 28 year old escapee from Jackson Georgia, was captured after a 90 minute chase involving the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Aiken County Sheriff’s Department, and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. He hijacked Patrolman H G Hill’s car, seized other vehicles, and fired at Hill during the escape. Price, already serving a life sentence for kidnapping and bank robbery, was returned to finish his sentence as charges of armed robbery and related offenses were filed.
Israeli warplanes battered central and southern Suez targets after Egypt claimed a crossing raid at El Shatt. Cairo said Egyptian anti air fire repelled the planes. An Israeli communique later claimed arrests of Arab saboteurs in Jordan’s West Bank with a water culvert and damages noted at several sites.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile returns to Leavelle McCampbell High School Graniteville from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday inviting first time and repeat donors. The drive aims to collect 175 pints of blood and now includes donors aged 61 and older who meet eligibility.
