Aiken High Marching Band unveils new green uniforms

The 102 member Aiken High Band debuts fresh green uniforms for the opening game against Langley Bath Clearwater High. After a two week fund drive the booster club raised 23874.04 dollars with 20191.54 cash and 3682.50 pledged.

Hurricane David Leaves 16 Dead

Hurricane David killed at least 16 people on Dominica and one in Puerto Rico as it moved toward the Dominican Republic. The storm devastated Roseau and left 200,000 homes blacked out while authorities evacuated low lying areas and launched relief operations.

Charles Muckenfuss Aiken civic leader dies

Aiken County hospital reported the death of Charles H. Muckenfuss civic leader and former Aiken Public Works director. The 1969 retirement followed long service with the South Carolina Highway Department and prior roles with the Tennessee Valley Authority and local organizations. Funeral services are set at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with burial in the church cemetery. Surviving are his widow three daughters a son a sister a brother and five grandchildren. Friends may call at 545 Highland Park Terrace or George Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today 7 to 9 p.m.

Aiken Women Host Jerry Lewis Telethon Pledge Center

The Aiken Business and Professional Women's Club sponsors a pledge and donation center at WAKN WNEZ to support the Jerry Lewis Telethon for muscular dystrophy. A second center is set at Sno Cap Drive In on York Street for those who cannot attend in person. WRDW Channel 12 Augusta will air 20 percent of the telethon with local participation.
