Anita Winds Skirt Shore as It Lingers in Gulf

Hurricane Anita moved slowly west in the Gulf of Mexico about 300 miles from New Orleans with 90 mph winds. Forecasters warned of high tides and rising waters as the storm tracked toward Texas, with gale winds spanning 30 miles east and 100 miles west.

School Officials Sketch Priorities For New Buildings

Aiken County school leaders met in executive session to refine priorities in the district building program. A $13 million bond approved by voters last November will not fully fund the proposed plan, says Emilie Towler chairwoman of the Board of Education. No decisions were reported and she declined further comment.

Offshore workers evacuees as hurricane eyes coast

About 4,500 offshore workers were moved inland on Tuesday while 10,000 vulnerable points along 430 miles of coast were evacuated. Hurricane watch stretched from Vermilion Bay in Louisiana to the Mexican border as rigs and platforms were secured. Emergency valves were shut on thousands of wells halting roughly 500,000 barrels of oil daily and millions of cubic feet of gas. Thousands of residents fled inland including 6,000 from Ca me Parish after memories of a 20 year old strike.

Precinct Revamp May Cost 62000 in Aiken County

County officials estimate a 62000 cost to redraw precinct lines if approved by the U S Department of Justice. At a council meeting Eugene England and Joan Blackwell outlined ballpark figures including state computer use five full time board members eight months and postage for project materials.
