AP reports five Americans killed in action last week, three missing, and three wounded, the lowest weekly total since 1965. One American died of nonhostile causes. South Vietnamese toll: 951 killed, 2,514 wounded, 204 missing.
North Vietnam accused the United States of obstinacy in backing the Thien regime and US neo colonialism in South Vietnam. Hanoi spokesman said no brute force can stop the Vietnamese fight as Nixon bombs Vietnam and Hanoi urged courage to end military adventures at the 157th session of peace talks led by acting chief delegate Nguyen Minh Vy.
U S Navy pilots from the Kitty Hawk and Oriskany reported major strikes in North Vietnam. They levelled the Dong Ngan ammunition depot 13 miles northeast of Vinh with 100 secondary explosions and seven large fires. Other attacks hit a fuel depot west of Vinh and a storage area 39 miles south, causing explosions and a large fire and destroying or damaging hundreds of supply crates.
About 1 000 Roman Catholic families have abandoned the rent and tax strike in Londonderry Northern Ireland's second largest city the Londonderry Development Commission said. The move follows a year long protest by Catholic civil rights activists seeking jobs and housing parity with Protestants. Londonderry has more than 5 000 city housing units with nearly 3 000 in the Bogside and Creggan districts, areas held by Irish Republican Army figures and recently occupied by British troops.
Washington sources say the Soviet Union may be forced to withdraw its naval bases in Egypt as relations deteriorate after President Sadat ordered the withdrawal of Soviet air force and army units. Intelligence officials cite reports of a Sadat meeting with subordinates and say they cannot confirm details but lean to Sadat allowing continued Russian naval use.
FAA Administrator John H. Shaffer announced that all 18 aircraft hijack for ransom attempts this year failed. In each case the attackers were arrested killed or held by a foreign government or hostile authority.
In the Democratic primary, 14 of 140 renomination contenders were eliminated, including Sen. James P. Mozingo of Darlington who lost to Ed Saleeby. Other senators losing were J. C. Bonner, Lewis Wallace, Claymon Grimes, and Gordon Garrett, with several runoffs slated for September 12. Nine House incumbents also lost, and a number of newcomers secured Senate nominations while Republicans plan many November bids.
The Democratic primary produced no winners for the new Aiken County Board of Commissioners. The U S Justice Department ruled the residency clause did not affect the act creating the board, though two eliminated Democratic candidates had residency filings. Republicans and losing Democrats have not challenged the nominees.
Two people were found dead at 7:02 a.m. near Eastern Grocery Store off Pine Log Road in North Augusta. Authorities say a man killed a woman then shot himself with a .38 revolver. Victims were David Brown, 44, and Eva Henley, 32, both white.
