Trenton Boy Dies in Tunnel Collapse

An 11-year-old, Laron Dennis of 316 Dallard Road, Trenton, was fatally injured when a tunnel he dug collapsed about 40 yards from his home. He was a sixth grade student at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School in Granitette. The father found him around 6:45 p.m. and he died at Aiken Regional Medical Centers after an autopsy was planned.

Gaston slams into S C coast near Bulls Bay

Tropical Storm Gaston battered the South Carolina coast with 70 mph winds causing trees to fall and power lines to snap. Gov. Sanford declared a state of emergency and urged residents to shelter as crews prepared for damage assessments and debris removal. The storm moved north at about 8 mph toward inland areas, triggering flood watches and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Crews Mobilize to Restore Power After Gaston Hits Charleston Area

Technical crews from across South Carolina including Aiken head to Charleston area to restore power after Tropical Storm Gaston left about 95 thousand customers in the dark, a figure higher than the 32 thousand affected by Charley earlier. SCE&G says up to 125 thousand lost service during the storm and will staff the area until full restoration.

Deadline nears to join 2004 general election roll

Voters in Aiken County have 33 days to register for the November 2, 2004 election. The cutoff is noon October 2 at the Voter Registration and Election Commission office on 912 Vaucluse Road. Open hours 9 a.m. to noon that day. Proof of residency required and various state offices offer registration sites countywide.

Aiken Soccer Cup ends after exciting weekend

The 2004 Aiken Soccer Cup concluded with a finals win by the Columbia County Patriots over the Aiken Burn in Girls U-18, who finished second after two ties and a win. Volunteer Kathy Abney praised the event’s success and the concession workload at Whitney Field.
