Wallich Warns Inflation Could Worsen Next Year
Fed board member Henry C. Wallich warned at a Chicago speech that inflation may rise beyond the current 8 percent rate and urged a tough tax incentive plan to penalize or reward business and labor based on price and wage actions. He warned of possible recession if inflation climbs higher and criticized traditional spending and rate policies as ineffective. The July consumer price report showed a 0.5 percent rise, driven by grocery price declines, while nonfood prices rose 0.7 percent. The Commerce Department reported a July trade deficit of 2.99 billion dollars, nearly double June’s gap.
