A Talk Back column touches on church funding and self sufficiency in a secular nation, debates Faith Based Initiative and federal funds, questions a computer tracking system for South Carolina, comments on gun purchasing by lawmakers, rising meat prices, and the Hitchcock Parkway bypass.
A reader thanks for generosity in a store and restaurant gestures, praising the upcoming events page and the newspaper's TalkBack option. Messages encourage brief, space-efficient comments and note editors may edit for content.
Work has started on Aiken Technical College's 36000 square foot Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing at the ATC campus. RW Allen of Augusta is contractor. McMillan Pardan Smith Architecture designed the facility, slated for late summer 2015 completion with an $8.5 million budget. The project supports ATC programs in advanced manufacturing welding radiation protection technology and nuclear quality systems.
University Hospital Board votes to allocate about 2.7 million dollars for a 7000 square foot prompt care facility on Silver Bluff Road in Aiken. The unit will serve patients without a primary physician or with non life threatening injuries and allow in house lab work and minor imaging. The hospital already operates similar centers in Evans and Grovetown Georgia. The project faced zoning and traffic concerns from the City Council several years ago as plans for a 72000 square foot medical office complex were debated across from Centre South Shopping Center.
Sylvester notes the property remains unused as planners weigh a care facility with at least 10 staff including a physician. University Hospital seeks a stronger presence in Aiken with an 88 bed assisted living proposal and a 50 bed medical center with emergency wing near USC Aiken and Aiken Regional, while projects must clear Planning Commission and City Council.
Eric Brinkley 30 will assume the full presidency of the Aiken Young Professionals in 2015 after Derrick McLane leaves for a Washington D.C. opportunity. The USC graduate also works as an operations manager for Aiken Laundromats and centers, linking leadership at Boy Scouts of America and his career to a group focused on networking, education, and community service locally. The club has 250 members, 600+ community service hours through 2013, and raised over $6,200 for local charities. Brinkley aims to grow active membership and sponsor support in the coming year.
