US Senator Strom Thurmond, a longtime political figure from South Carolina, is scheduled for unveiling ceremonies of his portraits in Lexington Saluda and McCormick courthouses. Gov Beasley and several federal judges will attend. Thurmond once presided in these courts before World War I and his 1946 governorship.

Labor Day Office and Service Closures Across Aiken Area
A number of local offices and services will close Monday for Labor Day. Aiken County public schools and public libraries in Aiken Bamberg Barnwell and Edgefield Counties will be closed, as will banks and post office mail delivery. The city and county offices will reopen Tuesday. garbage collection shifts to Tuesday. The Aiken Standard will publish as usual but its office will be closed.

Burned churches to get donations of new organs
AKRON Ohio AP Burned churches in the South will receive 17 organs on September 14 for distribution. Trinity Lutheran and Wesley Temple A M E Zion churches will bless the truck before the trip. Last year they raised 212000 dollars to aid rebuilding efforts after arson. The process has been an overwhelming experience says Rev Dr Curtis Walker.

Judge sets aside damages against AMAX Gold in Haile Mine case
U S District Judge Patrick Michael Duffy ruled the 9 million dollar damages verdict against Amax Gold Inc. be set aside, sayingKershaw Gold Company failed to provide an adequate basis for the jury to determine damages. Piedmont Mining Co. will appeal the decision, and the Haile Gold Mine project in Lancaster County remains in dispute between Kershaw and Amax subisidiaries Lancaster Mining Co. and Haile Mining Co.
