Gov. Richard W. Riley starts his tour with a 4 to 5 30 p m reception at South Aiken High School hosted by the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce and the Consolidated School District of Aiken County. He then attends a 7 30 p m benefit banquet at North Augusta High School sponsored by the Greater North Augusta Chamber and the Concerned People of Area 2, followed by a private Democratic fund raiser at John Ellis residence in Aiken between events.
Columbia AP University of South Carolina freshman Chris Caughman 17 says his youth is an asset in his bid for a Lexington Town Council seat. He plans to register to vote at least 30 days before the October 8 election and will turn 18 on September 3.
President Reagan hosts his annual press party in Santa Barbara smiling and joking despite recent cancer surgery and a nose cancer patch. He and Nancy flew from Santa Ynez for the event at Bar ney Klinger’s home as doctors note good prospects for normal life.

NORTH AUGUSTA The Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce filed a response to the Aiken County Board of Education amid a push for a separate Area 2 school system. The outgoing president read a statement backed by 16 directors, defending public education while criticizing how the resolution was introduced. Board members disputed the chamber’s critique and longtime area rep Sally Bigger noted she abstained from the vote after not reading the resolution.
Clemson Extension chairman Tom Acker notes Edgefield County area yields reached about 50 percent of a full crop with some growers higher or lower. Ridge area produced most of South Carolina’s peaches while Spartanburg suffered near wipeout. Individual growers report 70 to 80 percent yields in Johnston and Johnston west, about one third in Monetta. Prices were good overall despite mid summer lull.
Tropical storm Elena upgraded to a hurricane as it nears the Gulf Coast. Forecasters warn Keys drivers to avoid roads while a hurricane watch extends from Apalachicola to Grand Isle. Elena’s center was west of Key West with strong winds and tides impacting the southern coast.
U S housing data show new home sales rising 1.4 percent in July to an annual rate of 704000, the highest since December 1983. The report also upgrades April to June totals with revised gains, and the July average price climbs to 101900.
