Marsha Lynn Rayne 23, from Winthrop Harbor Illinois, a Peace Corps volunteer, was found slashed to death in a remote area of Liberia, officials said the corps' first murder in its ten year history.
Astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. was awarded two stars as a United States Navy Rear Admiral in a Pentagon ceremony. He stated he plans to stay in the space program as head of the astronaut office, becoming the first American space pilot to reach the star rank.
Brig. Gen. John W. Donaldson charged with murdering six Vietnamese civilians and assaulting two others testifies at a special hearing linked to Col. Oran Henderson’s trial over the My Lai massacre cover up. The hearing probes a missing report Donaldson, a 47 year old West Point graduate, says would exonerate Henderson.
Diplomatic sources say Gunnar V. Jarring will resume his role as U.N. special envoy for the Middle East arriving in New York mid September to meet Israeli and Arab foreign ministers during the General Assembly.

Gale warnings stretch to New Jersey as rainfall reaches four inches and possible river flooding northward. No evacuations had been ordered by midmorning amid sparse beach traffic.

The estimate hinges on individual school contracts and timing. NEA claims 80 percent eligible for increases, a figure government officials question but won’t dispute publicly.
District Superintendent Dr. G. T. Myers praised area and district staff, bus drivers, students, and parents for a smooth first day of school. He noted all nine month staff will be paid on the 1970-71 scale with 10 month and 12 month staff on the 1971-72 level, after wage freeze clarifications. The Aiken Republican Party elected Fred Langdon Jr. as president and announced the GOP primary date for September 28. In a Washington meeting AFL-CIO President Meany pledged a labor role in shaping policy after the 90 day wage price freeze. Labor Secretary Hodgson said Meany gave a listening ear and concern for problems caused by the freeze. Assistant Secretary Usery and Lane Kirkland laid groundwork for further talks as economists weigh Stage 2 options and possible trimming of price controls.
