Hero Firefighter Rescues Diplomat as U N HQ Collapses
1st Sgt. William von Zehle, a 52 year old retired fire chief, crawled into a 30 foot shaft beneath the collapsed U N headquarters to reach diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello after a suicide bombing killed at least 23. He ferried debris up by brick, pressed a pulse, gave morphine, and watched Vieira de Mello die as authorities pulled him free.
