Syrian backed Al Saika guerrillas and pro Nasser Lebanese fighters clashed in Sidon about 20 miles south of Beirut. Twelve Lebanese were captured by Al Saika forces. Both sides entrenched behind barricades and rooftop positions. Explosives damaged the Saika office earlier with no casualties reported.
The capital murder case of Capt. Jeffrey R. MacDonald is postponed as Army psychiatrists observe him. Col. Walter Rock ruled the hearing should pause so experts can assess the Green Beret physician, accused of killing his wife and two daughters. MacDonald remains at Walter Reed Hospital awaiting further proceedings.
About 150 friends and relatives gathered at Louis B. Russell's Indianapolis home to mark the eve of his second heart transplant anniversary. Russell, 45, the world's longest living heart recipient, says he feels fine and remains active as a school teacher and public speaker. He received the heart of a 17 year old gunshot victim at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond on August 24, 1968. Doctors report no rejection signs for over a year though he has semiweekly electrocardiograms.

U S B52 bombers approached within a mile of the DMZ to strike at North Vietnamese forces threatening an allied artillery base known as Fire Base Fuller. The 600 ton raid hit bunkers and camps six miles west of Fuller, a base manned by Americans and South Vietnamese until last spring. Ground fighting remained light in South Vietnam and Cambodia.
An explosion at the University of Wisconsin in Madison killed a graduate student and injured three researchers and a watchman. The blast heavily damaged a mathematics building housing equipment valued in the millions of dollars.
