Weight loss surgery linked to longer life in studies
The first long term studies of stomach stapling and obesity treatments show lasting weight loss and markedly improved survival. Swedish and U S researchers report 40 to 430 percent lower death risk seven years after drastic surgery compared with non surgical patients. The studies, in the New England Journal of Medicine, may broaden eligibility and shift perceptions of bariatric procedures. Dr Philip Schauer of the Cleveland Clinic says the work dispels cosmetic notions and supports life saving potential.
