Durable goods rise 0.6 percent in July in US factory orders

US Commerce Department data show durable goods orders up 0.6 percent to 172.7 billion dollars in July, with gains across major categories except transportation. Analysts expected a 1.0 to 1.5 percent rise after June. May saw a sharp 42 percent surge, while overall economy may slow in the second half from a strong Q2. Judge's order keeps hold on five ex-council members case

Circuit Judge Henry Floyd denied the New Ellenton town attorney's bid to stay a temporary injunction. The five former council members who quit Aug 1 must still operate and collect revenues from a partially completed sewer system under a 1993 consent order. Floyd noted their resignations show unwillingness to comply and that bond debt from a failed $5 million sewer project remains to be addressed. Ex-council member Ronald Carmack and former acting mayor Eldon Berry declined immediate comment. The town attorney said resignations appeared staged.

Concealed weapons permit rollout begins in Aiken County

The Law Abiding Citizens Self Defense Act takes effect today with applications available at the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Howard Sellers expects many inquiries and outlines a multistep process including a $50 fee, fingerprinting, residence proof, an eight hour SLED course, photos, and a background check. SLED and FBI checks determine permits, with the sheriff able to concur or object. if no action in 10 days, approval is automatic. Applications and possible scheduling may expand public fingerprinting hours.

High tech grant funds boost Aiken County schools

South Carolina ETV will provide 285000 for a telecasting technology center at the Educational Center on Edgefield Avenue to produce and transmit interactive programs. The facility will connect teachers across the district, expanding curriculum with AP courses remedial instruction and foreign languages for the 1997 96 school year.

Yellow bikes revamping in Aiken amid rumors of demise

City engineer Roger LeDuc says the Yellow Bike Program is being revamped not ended. Three bikes returned from the Australian Olympic team, with seven total and three more to be painted, bringing free bikes to ten. Some bikes were taken for repairs by volunteers from the Environmental Club and the Aiken Bicycle Club.

A four month review ended with a unanimous subcommittee vote to give local firms first bid opportunity. The Vendor Outreach Program will target Aiken County businesses initially while not excluding others. The six month trial will be assessed and city council must ratify in September to reduce mystery in city procurement.

Beech Island Gum Swamp Road gains road stabilizer aid

Beech Island residents see Gum Swamp Road improved by a Phillips 66 fabric matting to stabilize the erosion prone, flooded two foot wide road paralleling Tennis Ranch Road. County Administrator William Shepherd confirms 2,500 feet laid in March with plans for more, at a cost of about 20 to 25 thousand dollars per section and total initial one mile funding of fifty thousand.
