Ramseyer urges tariff focus on items farmers buy
In Mt tumwa Iowa Representative Ramseyer a Rules Committee member urged agricultural groups to press for lower duties on goods farmers purchase and lighter burdens on certain commodities. He defended H R 2667 noting burdens on consumers and farmers, cited casein leather and sugar as examples, and forecast several legislative hurdles before final passage. He described a proposed Senate sugar sliding scale and warned of a trading scheme between leather makers and farm advocates. He said free hides and leather products would help farmers more than proposed tariffs.
