Ridge Spring may hand law enforcement to Saluda County Sheriff as an ordinance to dissolve the town police department nears passage next month. Real estate agents describe Whiskey Road south of Aiken as a fast warming frontier for commercial development. Dean Newman of Meybohm Realtors notes many small tracts of one to three acres outside Aiken’s city limits, ideal for restaurants or strip centers, with limited zoning restrictions. Ronny Bolton of R-B Bolton & Associates confirms representing about twenty parcels in Aiken, many not yet leased as growth pushes toward Newington.
On June 1 2005 Aiken Technical College welcomed the first instructors for its new two year Associate Degree in Nursing program created with USC Aiken. Interim chair Jody Madden and program coordinator Donna Goings led early hires as classes began with 32 students in August and another 32 in January. By January 2007 approval allowed enrollment of 40 nursing students as the program expands with pediatrics maternity intensive care and geriatrics faculty additions.
