Energy Secretary James Schlesinger says major oil firms will back the House energy bill with price controls and taxes rather than risk a Senate fight and keep current rules. He argues the bill offers adequate incentives for oil and gas production without triggering excessive profits for stockholders.
A tornado struck Neoga Illinois at 1 p m Sunday leaving a lakeside path of rubble. Five people were killed and about fifty were injured as dozens of homes were demolished along the Lake in east central Illinois. Emergency officials described complete destruction with no walls standing in the path of the storm.
Attorney General Griffin Bell seeks to consolidate the Justice Department’s scattered crime data into a new Bureau of Criminal Justice Statistics. The move targets ending fragmented reporting and providing clearer crime trends and causes to inform policy and enforcement efforts.

William J. Mottel of DuPont Savannah River plant urged TEC 1976-77 graduates to replace worry with concern. He spoke to about 100 graduates and 200 guests at the H C Weeks Center.
About 275 school buses will return to serve Aiken County students for the new school year. Officials say transportation figures will resemble last year with around 55 students per bus and total bus route enrollment near 13,500.
