State unemployment rises in July as labor force shrinks

South Carolina posted a 10.8 percent jobless rate in July up from 10.7 percent in June, keeping the state among the nation’s highest. The month saw a 30,000 drop in total jobs led by education cuts and Census temp losses, while the labor force fell for the fifth straight month, with 40,000 fewer workers year over year. Economics Prof. Mark Witte cautioned that weak labor participation may keep unemployment elevated for years.

The $75 billion effort aims to lower payments for at risk borrowers but foreclosures rise. RealtyTrac reports 2.3 million homes foreclosed since December 2007.
