The New Ellenton Republican Club will hold a 7:30 p.m. nominating convention at the Civic Center to select municipal candidates for the Nov. 5 general election and Dec. 3 special election. Vacant council seats and a water commission post are at stake amid a $5 million sewer bond dispute.

President Clinton signs the 90 cent raise boosting the minimum wage from 4.25 to 4.75 per hour effective October 1. A separate 40 cent increase to 5.15 will take effect September 1, 1997. Workers in Louisville Kroger and Kmart stores react with cautious optimism about higher earnings and potential price effects.
Valley residents heard pitches from 15 candidates at an Old Fashioned Stump Meeting sponsored by the Visions 2004 Group and Family Eye Care Centers. Local, state and federal contenders spoke six minutes each while most attendees were candidates or staff. Don Walling urged broader turnout to hear all viewpoints.
Aiken's new fiscal year sees 102 business license applications already processed by inspector Al Cothran. He predicts surpassing 697 licenses for 1995-96, as demand rises with shifts away from Savannah River Site layoffs and a growing home based business scene. Revenue total for 1995-96 reached about 3.39 million with 2,587 licenses issued. A local purchasing task force may give county firms preference in city bidding.
The Aiken Inspection Division reports 17 building permits for residential dwellings in August, with five new home permits totaling 573000 added for the month. Last July's figures showed only one new residential permit for 317000. Plans for a new restaurant at Richland Avenue West and Gregg s Avenue are under review, while developer Jerry Waters targets an 83 unit townhouse complex in Sandstone Subdivision and Gold s Gym may gain council approval. An office complex at Silver Bluff and Pine Log roads is proposed. In the prior year 874 permits were issued across 64 new homes and numerous commercial projects, with inspections totaling hundreds across building code, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
