Aiken City Park Commission plans a long term cleanup of key entrances including U.S. 1 north and south and S.C. 19 north. Officials say eye sores like dilapidated buildings and abandoned cars affect town image and extraterritorial rules may guide future expansion.
Kimberly-Clark will place 53 employees on extended layoff after Labor Day due to excessive inventories possibly lasting into 1981. The plant in Beech Island employs 740, offering holiday pay and unused vacation pay. Severance is provided after one year of service. Beloit Manhattan reports no layoffs locally. Two more drug arrests raise the total to 21 in a three month investigation.
John B. Anderson narrowed his vice presidential choice to three: Patrick Lucey Kevin White and Barbara Jordan. Lucey is the frontrunner with White still considered but Jordan viewed for minority appeal. Announcement expected soon likely in Washington while Anderson tours nationwide.

New Ellenton imposes a permanent midnight curfew on six public bars by emergency ordinance despite no notice for the special meeting. Mayor Langley led the action citing citizen noise and loitering, while Town Attorney Harte noted the emergency process allowed without prior readings.
