Fewer Lawyers In S C House
The 1973 ruling ending multi member districts reshaped South Carolina politics. In 1966 84 of 170 General Assembly members were lawyers. by 1974 about 40 percent of House members were attorneys, while 28 lawyers served in the Senate. Lawyers’ high income and visibility aid elections, while non lawyers seek more influence. Rep. Marchant notes single member districts empower non lawyers, though credit for diversity is not solely reapportionment.
