Washington AP reports consumer prices rose 1.2 percent in July, the steepest monthly rise this year. Annual inflation hits 14.4 percent, the first double digit rate since September, as food up 1.9 percent, gasoline 4.3 percent, and used cars near 4 percent drive the gain.
Israeli authorities mount strongest guard at major airports during Secretary Kissinger’s visit to press Sinai peace talks with Egypt. Police detain an American-born man tied to the Jewish Defense League on suspicion of conspiring to assassinate Kissinger and seek a second American.
In Nashville Tennessee Charles Chuckie Smith 42 was arrested in a downtown motel on a prostitution charge after he allegedly offered to have sex for 50 dollars to a policewoman Pat Whites. Metro Police Captain Ramon Marler noted it as a first for a male arrest on prostitution.
New York fireman Mel Patrick Lynch, labeled by federal authorities as the mastermind in the Samuel Bronfman kidnaping, was ordered to undergo psychiatric testing by U.S. District Judge Richard Owen at the request of Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerald Feffer with Lynch and his attorney’s consent. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor announce a permanent reconciliation, planning a trip to Israel and possible marriage there.

The Aiken County Board of Commissioners reduced indigent care funding for this year to 120000 across county and neighboring hospitals. Former totals reached 201000 at Aiken County Hospital. HCA plans to replace the county hospital next spring, while Dr. Thomas Frist Jr. said no arrangement was discussed and that the county will cover indigent care.
The State Budget and Control Board refused to relax the bond issuance freeze for a USC Aiken multi purpose building and denied similar requests for the Spartanburg USC branch and the Charleston Medical University project. Gov Edwards supported reviewing all requests later while the board seeks a legal opinion on bond limits. It approved park and conservation expenditures instead.
