Final Shipments Move Weapons Plutonium to SRS Ahead of Closure

The U S Department of Energy announced the last shipment of 12 metric tons of weapons grade plutonium from Rocky Flats near Denver to the Savannah River Site, 12 years early. A ceremony with Secretary Spencer Abraham marked the milestone as Rocky Flats nears final closure in December 2006.

Three-Car Crash Kills Augusta Firefighter on Aiken–Augusta Highway

Graniteville firefighters Joey X. Johnson, 32, of Woodcrest Apartments in Augusta, died at the scene after his vehicle was struck by a black 1972 Chevrolet pickup that crossed the median and crashed into two other cars. Johnson, employed with EMS Gold Cross, perished from burns and injuries. an autopsy will confirm identity. The incident occurred just after 6:45 p.m. in the southbound lane near Triangle Dodge, tying up traffic for over three hours as responders cleared the wreckage. The pickup driver Thomas B. Hawkins, 29, and passenger James B. Turner, 40, both of North Augusta, were hospitalized. a southbound Dodge truck, driven by 15-year-old Mitchell W. Hawkins with instructor Walter Vance, 49, sustained no injuries to passengers.

Tourney brings booming business to Aiken for soccer cup

The eighth annual Aiken Soccer Cup draws 192 teams from four states to Aiken with about 9 000 attendees. Hotels report full bookings as of spring, with 67 rooms at the Hampton Inn nearly all reserved and other hotels filling rapidly.

South Carolina ACT scores hold at 19.2 average

South Carolina retained a 19.2 average on the ACT as more students took the test in 2008. The state trails the national average of 20.8, which also remained unchanged, while districts Lexington Pickens and Spartanburg surpassed the national mark. White students averaged 21.0 and black students 16.3, with tenth graders posting 16.7 on the preliminary test, ahead of the national 16.5.

Aiken County Seniors Score Slightly Above State ACT Average

Aiken County high school seniors posted a composite ACT average of 20.2 on a 36 point scale, above the state average of 19.2. Only 271 county seniors took ACT, fewer than a third of the roughly 800 who sat for the SAT.
