Jobless Claims Reach Decade High Amid GM Shutdown

U S jobless benefits filings jumped to 474000 in the week ended Aug 8 from 403000, the highest since late 1991. The rise followed GM plant shutdowns and a prior week spike as Michigan switched to mail filings, with the four week moving average at 436500 the highest since last April.

Storm Drain Proposal Put On Hold In Kalmia Hill

The Aiken City Council delayed a storm drainage piping plan for East and West Rollingwood Roads for at least a year to allow a broader study of flood control options. Republicans Choose Solicit or For Second Judicial Circuit

Voters will pick the Republican nominee for solicitor of the Second Judicial Circuit in a GOP primary to challenge Democrat Carroll Bryant in the November election. James Huff, North Augusta attorney and former Eleventh Circuit prosecutor, faces incumbent Barbara R. Morgan. Bryant has no opposition in the primaries.
