U S jobless benefits filings jumped to 474000 in the week ended Aug 8 from 403000, the highest since late 1991. The rise followed GM plant shutdowns and a prior week spike as Michigan switched to mail filings, with the four week moving average at 436500 the highest since last April.
The Aiken City Council delayed a storm drainage piping plan for East and West Rollingwood Roads for at least a year to allow a broader study of flood control options. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh urged another study while City Manager Steve Thompson said staff will re-examine two flood control options, costing about 800000 and 1600000 dollars, with costs shared by city county and state. Residents oppose draining yards and trees, suggesting alterations to avoid property loss.

Huff urges reduced plea bargaining and harsher trials for drug dealers. Morgan touts a tough crime stance and cites juvenile violence and the Metro Drug Task Force as key efforts.
