Police Detective Lt. William L. Skinner, 36, a top intelligence officer, died from a head wound after a shootout with the Republic of New Africa at its Jackson headquarters. Two other officers were wounded in the 20 minute gunbattle.
North Vietnamese forces suffered heavy losses as fighting and US bombing continued near the demilitarized zone. The South Vietnamese command said 142 North Vietnamese and 22 government troops were killed after a 12 hour battle near Camp Carroll, ending at dawn Wednesday. An additional 51 South Vietnamese were wounded.
President Nixon tours Grand Teton National Park before heading to Dallas for the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention. He plans to frame his economic program as senior to national strength, stressing renewed emphasis on keeping the United States militarily premier.
The comptroller general ruled Congress should halt the $2.1 billion military aid program until the Pentagon releases details of a long-range assistance plan. The Pentagon contends no such plan exists.

State School Superintendent Cyril B. Busbee says most South Carolina teachers will not qualify for scheduled raises due to a federal wage price freeze. The Office of Emergency Preparedness in Washington noted raises require contracts starting before the freeze began last Sunday. Busbee said many contracts would start afterward.

Thieves cut a hole in the roof of Economy Supply Co. in New Ellenton and took more than 2500 in pistols shotguns watches jewelry and cash. 35 pistols 14 shotguns 18 watches were reported stolen. Investigators from the sheriff s department and local police have no clues as the case continues.
