Kevin Simmons 43 aiken Public Safety officer died Sunday after contracting COVID-19 He joined ADPS May 10 2021 and served as a public safety officer in training He is survived by his wife and children His brother in law North Augusta councilman Eric Presnell confirmed both he and his wife contracted COVID and his wife remains on a ventilator in ICU The ADPS expressed profound sadness and asked for prayers while urging vaccination to others

Tornadoes Confirmed in Aiken and Edgefield Counties
Two tornadoes were confirmed Tuesday one near Aiken State Park in Aiken County and another in Edgefield County. The NWS issued tornado warnings for parts of Edgefield Lexington Aiken and Saluda counties with radar-confirmed rotation near Mount Vintage and a large dangerous tornado near Aiken State Park. The Aiken County school district delayed dismissal as warnings continued.

SC officials push masks in schools amid COVID debate

Majority of July virus cases among unvaccinated
South Carolina reports 26 848 confirmed COVID-19 cases for July 1 to 31 with 12 491 of 14 262 cases with known vaccine status not fully vaccinated about 88 percent. Among 550 hospitalizations with known vaccine status 424 or 77 percent were not fully vaccinated and 87 of 110 deaths with known status were not fully vaccinated. Lead by Delta variant and lagging vaccination rates health official notes breakthrough cases remain rare with mild or no symptoms. As of Aug 15 about 54 percent of eligible residents have at least one dose and 46 percent are fully vaccinated in the state.
