Libertarians Nominate Six For South Carolina Offices

The South Carolina Libertarian Party nominated six candidates for statewide offices on Sunday. Bill Griffin of West Columbia was named for governor, Mark Johnson of Columbia for lieutenant governor, David C. Morris of West Columbia for secretary of state, Jan Chapman of West Columbia for state treasurer, Andrew Amandola of West Columbia for comptroller general, and John B. Heaton of Aiken for superintendent of education.

Task Force Forms To Fight Fire Ants In South Carolina

A coalition of Southern lawmakers and farm officials forms a task force to push Washington for seed money and guidance to eradicate the fire ant. Rep. John J. Snow says the pest has infested 14.5 million acres across two thirds of South Carolina and more than 930 million acres in the region.

At Least Three Deaths Blamed On Hurricane Charley

Hurricane Charley battered the East Coast with 75 mph winds prompting evacuations for thousands. A light plane crash in the Chesapeake Bay near Baltimore killed three aboard and left authorities confirming deaths of others. Power outages reached about 75,000 as flooding and downed trees occurred along Virginia and North Carolina shores. The storm damaged Harrison's Pier in Norfolk and warnings extended from Cape Charles Virginia to Sandy Hook New Jersey.

Survey Shows Lack Of Confidence In Nuclear Regulation

A Media General AP poll of 1,365 adults finds 56 percent deem federal supervision of nuclear plants fair or poor and only 25 percent rate it good or excellent. Support for nuclear power varies by education with 48 percent of college grads and 21 percent of high school dropouts in favor.

Americans split on nuclear power for electricity

A 1365 adult poll shows 36 percent support nuclear power for electricity while 36 percent oppose it and 29 percent have no opinion or did not answer. Fifty six percent say the federal government does a fair to poor job supervising plants and 44 percent say safeguards are inadequate.

Negotiators Pass Tax Reform Amid Looming Congress Battle

Negotiators approved a sweeping tax overhaul sending a plan to Congress for final action. The package cuts individual rates, expands the 15 percent bottom rate, lowers the top to 28 percent, and raises business taxes by 120.4 billion over five years with a 34 percent corporate top rate. Most provisions take effect January 1, 1987. Representative Dan Rostenkowski hailed the accord after leaders of the conference completed work.
