New heart laser procedure offered at Aiken Regional
Aiken Regional Medical Centers now performs transmyocardial revascularization by laser led by Dr. L Dieter Voegle making the hospital the second in the state to offer the treatment. The laser creates channels in the heart muscle to improve blood flow for patients with severe angina who cannot undergo bypass surgery. The FDA approved TMRL in February 1999 after trials showed patients could reduce medication, increase activity, and shorten hospital stays, though not all patients are candidates.
