Valley residents await the Sassafras Festival at Gloverville Park starting Sept. 28 with rides and a family carnival. The University of South Carolina Aiken Circle K International Club earned a top international award at the 2000 Circle K Convention in San Diego. The club placed second in the Overall Club Achievement Silver Division among 26 60 members, highlighting strong community service and campus engagement.

A 15 year old male at Winner's Circle Group Home is accused of striking a 44 year old counselor in the mouth on Tuesday night. The counselor suffered a split lip and required stitches after driving himself to University Hospital in Augusta. Charges against the youth are pending and his identity is withheld due to age.
First Steps, an initiative to improve school readiness, will hold three assessment meetings in Aiken County. The meetings start at 5 pm on August 29 at Busbee Elementary Wagener, September 5 at Ridge Spring Monetta Elementary, and September 19 at Silver Bluff High School. Dinner and child care are free. The group aims to secure Level II grant funds by combining three meeting insights with existing data. Scott B. Hunter notes 22 percent of first graders were not ready, urging action for teachers and students.
The Aiken Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hosts a dog wash fundraiser Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cold Creek Nurseries, 398 Hitchcock Parkway. Dogs cost $10 with optional nail clipping and ear cleaning. proceeds fund food and medical supplies for the shelter.
