National Southern Corp. plans an 8,400 square foot expansion at its S.C. 19 plant, doubling size and creating 15 to 25 new jobs within 15 months. Industrial Park Gas Boost From New Valve Station

Aiken City Council unanimously approved a 60 by 40 foot easement for Carolina Pipeline Company to connect with SCE&G and increase natural gas to Aiken Industrial Park by 125 percent. The project includes a new valve station to regulate pressure and boost flow. Mayor Weeks tasked the city manager to coordinate details with the gas company.

Two Fires In Aiken Under Routine Investigation

Two fires over the weekend remain under routine investigation per Brunson Cromer of the Aiken Department of Public Safety. A Farmers and Merchants Bank branch on Whiskey Road closed for about two weeks after an early Friday fire. A downtown warehouse fire Sunday night was contained and did not spread. The incidents have not yet been assigned to the special arson task force.

Hopelands Brochure Earns City Council Backing in Aiken

City Manager Roland Windham praised the Hopeland Gardens brochure as unanimously approved. The color brochure costing 8000 dollars will be distributed by the South Carolina Tourism Division with funding split between the state grant and the City of Aiken. Ed Hudak and Sarah Caskey led photography and copy while Crowson Stone Printing of Columbia produced 30000 brochures. Hopelands, bequeathed by Mrs. C Oliver Iselin, sits at Whiskey Road and Dupree Place featuring gardens, an outdoor theater, and the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame open daily.

United Way Sets 1982 Goal At 707200 In Aiken County

The United Way of Aiken County Inc. announces a 1982 campaign goal of 707200 to support 25 agencies. Campaign Chairman Steve Griffin notes a 4 percent rise over last year and that two new agencies will be aided this year the Coalition to Assist Abused Persons and the S C Literacy Association. The Advanced Gifts division began Aug 12 with a 10 percent target to be reached by Sept 16.
