Airlines push for homegrown jet fuel amid high oil prices
The aviation industry seeks alternative fuels to petroleum as oil hovers above $100 per barrel. Experts cite challenges in engine compatibility and storage, with coal-based Sasol fuel used in South Africa as a model. Companies like American Clean Coal Fuels, Board Energy, and Rentech could supply up to 3 million gallons daily by 2012, while CAAFI aims to set standards for 50 percent synthetic jet fuel by year end.
