Rural roads see higher death rate than urban expressways
Officials note rural local roads, though less funded, account for more fatalities per mile than urban expressways. GAO data show rural roads with 1.1 trillion miles of traffic in 1999 had 25,107 deaths, 2.36 per 100 million miles, while urban freeways had 1.6 trillion miles and 1,354 deaths. Idaho reports rising highway fatalities amid scenic but mundane drives.
