Drainage Hearing on Wise Hollow Problems Set in Aiken

Aiken County Council and city and state lawmakers will hear residents at a 7 30 p m public hearing Tuesday at South Aiken High School Auditorium on Wise Hollow drainage problems spanning 13 square miles. A long term plan with a circa 1 million dollar cost will be developed with input from property owners on funding and ditch versus pipe options.

Town Targets Barking With 15 Minute Cap Law

Smit htown enacts a 15 minute maximum barking limit enforced by a stopwatch inspector. Fines range from 50 to 500 dollars with up to 15 days jail on third offense as owners vow to fight for canine rights. A separate report notes safe extraction from the Andrea Doria will yield little if any valuables on live TV.

Forecast calls for fair skies tonight and tomorrow with a slight chance of showers. Lows near 70 and highs near 90. Through Saturday to Monday expect partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures with mountain lows in the 60s to 70s and highs in the 80s. elsewhere highs near 90s.

Video game wizard Michael Rideout tops local segment air

Michael Rideout, USC Aiken computer major and 1984 Atari Fireworld Contest winner, appeared on WIS TV after a schedule change. He received a $25,000 jewel chalice prize for the contest. A family note mentions summer chiggers and a playful birthday greeting to a younger brother.

Independent Study Sought For The SRP

Federal legislation seeks an independent study on cancer and birth defects near nuclear centers including the Savannah River Plant near Aiken. The bill would move health studies from the Energy Department to Health and Human Services and involve CDC NCI NIH OSHA and the Bureau of Radiation Health.

Four Aiken County Residents Enter State Senate Races

Four Aiken County residents filed for state Senate seats within the first two days of the filing period for November 6 elections. Irene K. Rudnick and Fred Christensen seek Senate District 24, while Thomas P. Murphy and James Goodman target Senate District 25. No filings yet for Senate District 26.

County School Registrations Under Way

Countywide registration is underway for students in grades 7 8 11 and 12 with the new school year starting August 27 as a full day. Grades 5 6 9 and 10 register today with deadlines noted and students should bring required documents to their school.

Back To School Immunization Rules And Registration

Area office helps families choose schools and enroll new students. Health department forms verify required immunizations including three DTPs, three oral polio vaccines, and measles mumps rubella. Vaccines are given two months apart with a possible medical exemption. A SC Certificate of Immunization is issued after completion and stays on the student record. Bus routes lists start today.
