Wackenhut Begins Work At SRP

Wackenhut Services Inc of Coral Gables started preliminary work at the Savannah River Plant under a $41 million, 30 month security contract. About 510 security staff will serve SRP with 460 inspectors and 50 management roles, replacing 473 Du Pont workers. The firm, founded in 1954 by George R. Wackenhut, operates in 95 U.S. cities and 22 countries and is NYSE listed.

Aiken Flies High in All American Soap Box Derby

Ten year old Will Aiken from Aiken earned third in the junior division at the 46th All American Soap Box Derby in Akron Ohio. Tony Carlini Jr of Corona Del Mar Calif won the junior division with a 28.10 second time on the 953.75 foot course.

Retraction Calls SRP Series Inaccurate and Misleading

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution issued a front page retraction admitting errors in last year’s SRP health series. It notes omitted NIH findings, misattributed polycythemia vera cases, and inflated cancer and infant death rates in nearby counties. Derrick Won t Face Thurmond in 1986 Senate Race

U S Rep Butler Derrick said he has no plans to challenge Senator Strom Thurmond next year and will run again for Congress. Earlier, Gov Richard Riley had been pressured to enter the race but announced he would stay in office until his 1986 term ends.

South Aiken Church calls Rev Dewey Bowen as minister

The South Aiken Presbyterian Church has voted to call Rev. Dewey Bowen from Lugoff to serve as pastor. He will begin duties September 1 and give his first sermon September 4, with the Bowen family planning to rent housing in Partridge Lane while homes are completed in Huntcliff.
