In Seoul during an Independence Day address President Chung Hee Park avoided injury as his wife was seriously wounded. Security guards killed the gunman and arrested him. A 16-year-old choir singer was killed, possibly by police bullets. The first lady underwent two operations and remained in serious condition.
Washington leaders from both parties praise President Ford after a bipartisan 15 governor meeting. Governors Anderson and others commend Ford for a new open door policy and greater sympathy for state and city problems.
Former President Nixon was subpoenaed to appear as a witness for John Ehrlichman in the Watergate cover up trial next month. Ehrlichman’s California charges related to the break in at Dr. Lewis Fielding’s Beverly Hills office were largely dismissed after a California judge issued the subpoena before Washington authorities acted.
Panamanian students stoned the United States Embassy in Panama City smashing 80 windows while Panamanian national guard troops directed traffic nearby. The protest targeted United Brands for refusing to pay the export tax imposed by Panama Costa Rica and Honduras.
Three senators who oppose passage of a trade bill urged free emigration for Soviet Jews after meeting with President Ford. Sen. Henry M. Jackson said there are indications the issue can be resolved and the bill passed as Soviet movement appears significant.
Clay L. Shaw died at his home in New Orleans aged 60. He had been acquitted 50 years earlier by a state court jury of conspiring in the murder of President John F. Kennedy.
