Yazidis in Nebraska seek refuge from Iraqi persecution

Sekhan Safar and fellow Yazidis in Lincoln, Nebraska, flee ISIS violence in Iraq to be near family and gain safety. Lincoln hosts the largest Yazidi community in the United States, many arriving as translators during the Gulf War. In northern Iraq, Yazidis flee to Sinjar mountains with scarce food and water, while loved ones suffer under extremist threats. Safar's sister mourns a 3-year-old daughter who died in the escape attempt.

Safar in a Lincoln apartment tearfully says families will work hard and want their kids safe while rejecting government support. Yazidis praise U.S. airstrikes and humanitarian aid, fear for relatives in Iraq, rally at the Nebraska Capitol and governor’s residence, and seek help from Rep. Fortenberry and four colleagues who urged Obama for more aid.
