The Aiken County Board of Education approved new leaders for the 1996-97 year. Dr. Vernelle Tyler will become Leavelle McCampbell Middle principal, joining from Warrenville Elementary. Assistant principals include Joanne Skillman at East Aiken Elementary, Jan Bacot at Millbrook Elementary, Larry Dennis to Kennedy Middle, and Susan Malcolm at Clearwater Elementary.

Test results from the Metropolitan Achievement Test Seventh Edition show Aiken County public schools outperforming state and national averages in most categories. Students in grades four through 11 posted strong results, with 92 percent of local schools reporting 50 percent or more students at or above the national norm.
The Aiken 20/20 board voted 85 to 0 to cap expenditures of 25 000 or more within the city service district. The district spans Interstate 20 north, Talatha Church Road south, and the bypass west. Directors debated whether to stay city focused or allow outside projects before settling on city and district funding.
Aiken may copy Sumter’s city annexation method as the Annexation Task Force invites C Talmadge Tobias Jr to discuss appealing doughnut hole residents. Tobias, Sumter administrator since 1980, notes growth from 24,280 to 43,000 residents and three extra miles since 1988. He cites soft selling, open information, and honesty as keys with 25 annual annexation requests.
San Diego reports Bob Dole, after 35 years in Congress, ramps up outreach from the Republican National Convention. He attends a wreath laying at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial while contrasting with President Clinton who avoided the draft and did not serve in the military.
Senator Dole visited a Tuesday gathering with local disabled community members, promising dedication to their needs. He asserted he would not exploit the disabled and expressed genuine concern, as delegates prepare for a roll call vote at the Republican National Convention.
Dr. Christopher Romanek of Savannah River Ecology Laboratory says fossilized microbacteria observations on Mars are primitive clues, not proof of life. He notes collaboration with NASA and AACES, predicts public fascination could steer future studies and Mars missions in 1998.
