Citizens For Decency Through Law will hold a public meeting Tuesday at 7 30 p m at Aiken Technical College to discuss the pornography issue. The Aiken County Legislative Delegation will attend to answer citizen questions. The meeting will be held in the auditorium.
Wagener Town Council will discuss a five mill tax increase and the 1980-81 budget at a called meeting Monday at 8 PM. The session will be at Town Hall at the Earle and Park Streets intersection. Public invited.
Billy Garvin Corbett won Council Seat 1 defeating Debbie Rose Young 87 to 65 and will replace Terry McMillan. Marvin Widener was re elected to Council Seat 3 with 130 votes, running unopposed. A total of 155 Salley residents voted in the election.
A break-in at Aiken Elementary School caused office and classroom vandalism between noon Tuesday and 11 a.m. Wednesday. Damage estimate was not available. In a separate incident, a 1979 Toyota owned by Jackie Shelnut at 1141 Pickens St suffered $225 in damage.
Frances Batley, English exchange teacher at Aiken High in 1976-77, will return to Aiken this weekend. She hopes to reconnect with friends and can be reached Thursday or Friday at Gertrude Sheehan’s home 970 Dexter Street or by phone at 648-2059.
Aiken County Board of Voter Registration deputies will register voters at multiple sites from Aug 18 to Aug 22. Locations include Belvedere Fire Department Teamster Hall Salley City Hall Wagener City Hall Clearwater Gary Walker Center Jackson City Hall New Ellenton Civic Center and the board office at Richland Avenue. Saturday hours are 9 am to 1 pm at the office.
The Aiken County Public Service Authority moved its regular meeting from August 18 to August 25 at 7 30 p m. The session will be in the conference room of the Horse Creek Pollution Control Facility.
Thunderstorms and high winds raked the Midwest and Great Lakes regions with flooding in Cambridge Ohio the worst in 50 years. Creeks rose over 24 feet forcing 300 residents to evacuate and causing more than 25 million dollars in damage. Local resident Daisy McFarland described flood damage in her home as water above her hips in the kitchen.
Pvt Lisa Munn 19 of Fort Mill returned to duty at Fort Jackson after two weeks away citing harassment issues she reported. She was demoted from E-2 to E-1 and restricted to her unit with pay reduced from 500 to 449 dollars for two weeks. An investigation continues as she turned herself in July 15 in Jackson Mississippi.
