Daily HIV prevention pill shows early promise in Africa
Early trials of Viread for HIV prevention among African women suggest safety and fewer infections than placebo but numbers are too small for firm conclusions. Family Health International led the study funded by the Gates Foundation, with six months average follow up and 427 on Viread versus 432 on placebo. Further studies in Thailand Botswana and U S sites are planned to confirm effectiveness and address ethical issues.
