The Aiken County Parks Department will sponsor an after school program at the Aiken County Recreation Center beginning Tuesday. The program includes tutoring arts and crafts recreational activities and dinner for 15 dollars a week. It runs Monday through Friday from 2 30 pm to 6 pm. Call 663 6142 for more information.
Cent to sponsor Health Fat Health Center Week across the country recognizing community, migrant and homeless health centers. In Aiken the Margaret J Weston Medical Center hosts a health information day Aug 25 from 10 am to 2 pm at 127 Trafalgar Lane. For details call (803) 599-9283. The Hills of Cumberland Village hosts Memory Impairment Support Group meetings the second Tuesday each month from 7 to 8 30 pm next Aug 14, for families and friends of those with Alzheimer’s dementia and related conditions.

Stephen Cobb, a Pepperidge Farms driver based in Aiken Estates, wrote Plague at Redhook, a near future action adventure with mystery set on an alien world. He drafted it largely in rest stops and truck stops across many states, with help from his wife and via an eight hour audiotaped read. Copies are at Al's Books in Aiken and on Amazon.
North Augusta student Rachel McKie fills her summer with programs and tours as she prepares for her senior year at North Augusta High School. She earned a Beta Sigma Phi scholarship to attend the Presidential Classroom program in Washington, where she joined 300 other high school students in government and policy discussions. She previously served as a Senate page for Sen. Strom Thurmond and attended FBLA leadership events in Orlando and a Georgia Southern training session. McKie ranks in the top five percent of her class and plans to join the varsity tennis team and student leadership groups this coming school year.
