After five delays the $3.14 billion merger won FTC clearance. Mercantile, parent of JB White, becomes part of Dillard's at midnight. 33 of 103 Mercantile stores go to Belk May and Proffitt's. Fairfield Ohio HQ closed with about 1000 jobs cut. admin services move to Little Rock. The deal makes Dillard's the third largest U.S. retailer behind Federated and May.

Second suspect arrested in Beech Island kidnapping case
Aiken County Sheriff's Office reports the arrest of Nick Hall, 18, on four kidnapping and firearm counts in connection with a Beech Island incident. State Board moves to raise teacher hiring standards
In a 7 6 vote the South Carolina Board of Education approved preliminary plan requiring new teachers to score in the top half on the PRAXIS I exam, up from the bottom five percent on the National Teachers Examination.
