President Ford calls for an economic summit to combat inflation calling it Domestic Enemy No 1. He urges Congress to act within 10 days to revive wage and price monitoring tools and outlines a balanced budget goal for the new fiscal year.
After Gerald R Ford takes office the nation riffs on Ford humor from Capitol Hill. Jokes play on Ford in politics and everyday life with punny headlines about gas mileage and Edsel while the public awaits the new VP pick and possible wardrobe clashes.
House Judiciary Committee members from both parties oppose any House action that could be seen as a back door vote on impeaching former President Richard M Nixon. Chairman Peter W. Rodine Jr and others fear referencing the panel report would imply impeachment support.
In Geneva a ministerial meeting to hear Turkey's final compromise on Cyprus politics was canceled, derailing a renewed bid to revive stalled peace talks. Proceedings stalled as diplomats failed to agree on terms.
The IRS raises mileage allowances for business moving and medical use for 1974. Starting Jan 1 1974, business mileage up to 15000 miles is 15 cents per mile, then 10 cents for each extra mile. Medical and charitable use rises to seven cents per mile.
The Senate approved a three month extension of the government's power to set prices and allocate supplies. The measure heads to the House after Senator Henry M Jackson warned that fuel firms could withhold supplies and raise prices if the law expired on February 28.
The House voted to drop a government rule requiring seat belt interlock systems and safety air bags on 1975 model cars. Lawmakers say constituents are fed up with devices that force drivers to buckle up before starting their cars.
About 30 citizens crowded Jackson's council hall to oppose re routing the garbage truck from alleys to front yard pickup and to protest an ordinance. The town council passed the measure July 11 citing alley space limits and a planned larger truck.
Residents confront council over Chesterfield Street drainage as widening proposals clash with preserving trees. Attendees urge narrower pavements to reduce flood risk while highway officials push wider 36 foot lanes. Council adopts compromise 26 foot width with possible return to 36 if delays persist. South Boundary widening also discussed with curb and gutter plans to improve traffic flow from Laurens Street to Whiskey.
