Awake Heart Surgery Showcases Limited U S Case
A 61 year old man in Miami underwent a 4 hour 10 minute open heart surgery performed by Dr. Mark Anderson and colleagues using an epidural instead of general anesthesia. The operation began at 4 00 p m and ended at 12 20 p m with the patient stable afterward. Two assistants described it as only the second such operation in the United States and cautioned about anesthesia risks.
