Slaying charges filed in West Coast attack on Jewish center

A suspect, Buford O Farrow Jr, 97, is jailed after an attack at a Los Angeles Jewish community center that wounded three children and others. Federal prosecutors charged him with five counts of attempted murder following the shooting. A 5-year-old boy remained in critical condition.

Drought deepens as South Carolina conditions worsen

Gov Jim Hodges will visit farms in Darlington and Calhoun counties on Friday as the state remains officially in a moderate drought. The drought, reviewed by the Drought Response Committee, shows parts of the state 26 inches behind on rainfall with rivers falling to low levels. Forecasters warn a severe drought could be declared within 10 days as crops like peaches and cotton suffer.

Playhouse moving forward in downtown Aiken plan

The Aiken Corporation advances plans for relocating the Aiken Community Playhouse from Two Notch Road to a downtown facility costing about 2.1 million. Funds are projected from land and equipment sales and other sources totaling 13 million, with 400 000 to 500 000 needed in the coming years. County infrastructure and utility investments are part of the funding with a proposed speculative 60 000 80 000 square foot building in Ventures Industrial Park.

Sheriff Office defends arrest of man at industrial plant

Aiken County Chief Deputy Jody Rowland says deputies followed proper procedures in taking into custody Gary E. McClain 45 for raising significant security concerns at an industrial plant. McClain was seized July 29 and taken to Charter Rivers Hospital after Beech Island complaint. He was later released. Rowland noted a 1995 unexecuted warrant for discharging a firearm was found during routine checks.

Fire damages Snazzy's Barber Shop and Beau ty Salon in Aiken

A fire at Snazzy's Barber Shop and Beauty Salon at 1110 Barnwell Ave. N.E. caused extensive smoke and water damage. The blaze began around 8:45 a.m. in a shop corner near an electrical box and may have been fueled by chemicals in hair products. Firefighters subdued the flames in about 20 minutes. All 10 people present escaped injury.

United Way gears up for county campaign kickoff

United Way prepares for its annual drive supporting 28 agencies. About 35 campaign managers from local companies gathered at Helping Hands for training, receiving pledge packages and guidance. Marie McKinney Heath urged volunteers that fewer people are as fortunate, stressing the value of the six-step campaign plan.
