Greenville residents question the handling of a deadly incident at the Greenville Community Residential Center where Ricky Smith, 42, with cerebral palsy, died after a scalding bath on June 17. Regulators suspended the facility’s license as witnesses described unresponsive staff and officials noted low pay and licensure gaps.
In San Diego the GOP opened its four day convention to bolster Bob Dole and Kemp as polls show Clinton ahead. Dole promised a fresh start while Kemp framed himself as blocker. Security was tight around the convention center with barriers and detectors. Former Presidents Bush Ford Powell and Nancy Reagan headlined a fast paced first night. Senate and House hopefuls joined the stage as the party aims to retain control of Congress.
Charlene Gunter, a former Orangeburg High School track athlete, runs a 26.2 mile marathon to honor a friend who died of leukemia on November 12, 1969. She aims to raise at least $2,000 for leukemia research and programs with Team In Training, whose 14 members have trained since April for the race.
Ms Gunter of the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce runs the Washington DC marathon in honor of Robert Weirbach and Kaitlyn Shanahan both leukemia patients in remission. She aims to help the fight against a leading childhood killer. Her training has progressed from five miles to sixteen.
